Life-long Care For Our Residents
Every monkey at BMR has been rescued from a life of abuse or neglect. Sometimes, we’re called upon to intervene when a pet monkey becomes unmanageable, while other rescues involve far more severe and heartbreaking situations. Each monkey in our care receives essential veterinary treatment, including sterilization and vaccination, along with every opportunity to heal, recover, and thrive in a safe and nurturing environment
Our primary goal is to release as many monkeys as possible back into the wild. To achieve this, we begin by carefully assessing each monkey upon arrival to understand their existing natural skill set. From there, we design a tailored rehabilitation plan, incorporating methods such as environmental enrichment, colony building, predator awareness training, and essential survival skills like foraging for food. This process is neither quick nor simple—it can take up to three years to fully rehabilitate the monkeys and establish a strong, cohesive colony ready for a successful release
Unfortunately, not all monkeys can be released back into the wild. This may be due to a lack of opportunities throughout their lives to develop the necessary survival skills, or because they are too old to start learning them now. Pet monkeys are often in this situation. In other cases, the abuse and trauma suffered can lead to neurological disorders or physical ailments that make release unsafe, as these monkeys would not survive in the wild. For those who cannot be released, they will spend the rest of their lives in our care. We never euthanize a monkey unless they are suffering from illness, and it is the kindest option to prevent further pain. We provide a forever home for those monkeys who cannot be released, ensuring they live out their days in a safe, loving environment

AND GOALS
The New Sanctuary
Eco Camping and Glamping for Travelers
Community education
We are in the early stages of developing a new sanctuary for our monkeys. This sanctuary will offer our lifelong residents a more naturally enriched environment, complete with native flora, trees to climb, and much larger enclosures.
Additionally, we will be creating an organic fruit and vegetable farm, making us 100% self-sufficient in feeding our monkeys. The produce will also be available for sale in our farm shop and organic on-site café.
As part of our new sanctuary, we will be creating a beautiful campsite with glamping pods, offering travelers the chance to stay in the stunning surroundings and meet our monkey friends.
The funds generated by this initiative will be reinvested directly into BMR, supporting ongoing rescue and rehabilitation efforts, while also providing financial stability for the organization.
At BMR, our mission goes beyond rescuing monkeys in need—we aim to change attitudes towards them to help address the challenges they face. To achieve this, we plan to launch community education programs, including initiatives for children to teach them about the importance of animal welfare and, specifically, compassion towards long-tailed macaques.
We will also collaborate with land developers in Bali and Lombok, offering consultations to help minimize the impact of construction on monkey habitats. This work will include educating people on how to coexist with monkeys, especially if they find a colony on their land.
